Pubs and night-life in Southend
Southend has several nightclubs and
countless pubs. The variety available caters
to all tastes.
Pubs
Those on the sea-front are great for summer when you may sit
outside and enjoy the view of the sea. Closing times are usually
11:00pm, but some have late licences.
High-Street
Starting at the North end of the High Street, this list of
pubs is ideal for a 'Pub Crawl' without much walking involved:
- Cork & Cheese - staggering array of beers - try
everything and you'll be staggering
- The Hogs Head - pleasant surroundings with small non-smoking
area (food available)
- The Town House - worth a visit
- Chicago Rock Café - book a table for dinner - get in for
free !
- O'Neils - lively pub with a taste of old Ireland
- Churchills - classy pub sometimes with entertainment (no
jeans no trainers mate !) (food available)
- The Post House - huge pub with excellent choice of beers
and often the cheapest beers in town (food available)
- The Clarence Yard - worth a visit
- The Sun Rooms - artistic decor, worth a visit
- Baker's Bar - very popular basement bar (food available)
- The Fish & Firkin - open late
Sea Front
Travelling from the West this list gives another great
itinerary for a pub crawl. This one is for the brave, though, as
some of the seafront pubs are for the more enthusiastic drinker !
The following is not a complete list - these are the ones I know
about:
- The Esplanade - regular performances from local bands -
I've enjoyed many a night-out here
- The Forresters Arms - exotic dancers most lunchtimes and
evenings (so I'm told !)
- Dream's (open late) - dance music often at the weekend
- Smithy's - small friendly establishment
- The following pubs are also on the seafront but further
outside town:
- The Castle - pleasant drinking house, in summer you can
watch the water-sports
- The Halfway House - food available
- The Shorehouse - great family pub, food available, and
kiddies play-area
There is also a pub and bar at the end of the pier.
Outskirts
- The Guildford - very popular with the locals
- The White Horse - food available
Nightclubs
Southend has several nightclubs. Most cater for the majority
with a mixture of current sounds, with some pure dance-music and
some old favourites thrown in. Admission charges vary, but during
the week there are often special offers.
